Monday Motivation: The Twinkle in Idris’ Eyes

I’ve got just the inspiration for your Monday Motivation–one that will lead you to a Terrific Tuesday and a Wonderful Wednesday: Idris Elba.

Ah, Mr.  Elba, Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. This accomplished actor and history-making winner of two Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, is amazing to watch.

(Why an actor of his caliber would be snubbed by the Oscars this year remains a mystery to me.)

I’d suspect that many who appreciate his immense acting talent would pay to listen to him to read a telephone directory. Fortunately, we have the occasion to hear him speak about something far more interesting and important.

He recently shared his insights about diversity in the media before the British Parliament, at an appearance organized by Channel 4, a British public television channel. If you can’t watch it–and you should–read the transcript.

Elba challenged his industry to “climb out of the box,” and not only called for diversity of skin color and gender, but also in thought.

It’s not an easy subject to tackle. It’s easy for people to feel defensive, and not want to hear what is being said. Elba delivered his remarks with a deft touch, tackling a thorny subject with wit, humor and charm. And his advice can be applied in other realms of our lives as well.

My eyes may be dark, but they definitely twinkle. –Idris Elba

Yes, Mr. Elba. Your eyes most certainly twinkle.

Our motivation today: Climb out of the box and pursue that which makes your eyes twinkle.

And here’s a bonus for you: Elba’s acceptance speech at the SAG awards.
