Monday Motivation: “I’m Thankful for Everything.”

¡Hola! ¡Mi Gente! Welcome to the week.

Today’s Monday Motivation comes from Pedro Martinez’s acceptance speech during his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown yesterday. While baseball is not my favorite sport (that would be football–and I am not the only one counting the days, waiting for its return), I find inspiration in every sport, and I appreciate and admire athletes’ dedication and heart to mastering it, whether that sport takes place in an arena, a stadium or on a field. And I always find inspiration when they have the opportunity to speak about their triumphs.

Martinez’s speech is no different in that regard. His speech was raucous and religious; funny and serious. But most of all, it was full of gratitude. Speaking in both English and Spanish, he acknowledged and thanked nearly everyone who touched his life: his family, his fellow Hall of Fame inductees, teammates, coaches, mentors, rivals, the Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, baseball fans (Red Sox Nation in particular), the people of the United States and the people of the Dominican Republic.

He even acknowledged Ray Mabus, Secretary of the Navy. (Mabus attended to announce that the Navy’s newest warship will be named the USS Cooperstown.)

It was that kind of speech: endearing, heartfelt and thankful.

His speech is not short, but out of all he said, take these words with you today, and throughout the week:

Words have the power to build you–or to break you … I don’t know if I will find the words in Spanish or English, but my God, I’m thankful. I’m thankful for everything. —Pedro Martinez.

Agreed. Now–let’s go get ’em!
